The World Atlas of Street Food Book Review

The heads up on a new book which explores the different street foods found all over the world. It'll open your eyes up to the huge diversity of street food around the globe and inspire you. It'll also make you very hungry.

As I write this, my kitchen consists of basically four, freshly-plastered walls, a boiler near the window and some pipes and electrical cables flowing out of holes in the wall like little grey snakes. We're hoping to have it finished in the next couple of weeks, but, my goodness am I keen to get back in there and cooking again. Especially after seeing this book. 

I was asked if I'd like to take a look at this new release, The World Atlas of Street Food. After all, everyone loves a bit of street food. It's trendy, usually kind of healthy and you can eat it anywhere. Street food is brilliant. 

And I thought I knew about street food. But I really didn't. The beautifully photographed book takes us on a trip around continents of the globe, showing us an insider's glance at where you can get the best street food, wherever you are. There's Outer Borough's braised beef sandwiches in New York, Polish dumplings in Krakow and grilled squid sticks at the Tsukiji Market in Tokyo. The photography is colourful, authentic and all-action - from a sizzling wok at Chiang Mai in Thailand, to a pile of smoky chorizos being grilled on a mobile parrilla in Buenos Aires. It's a real eye opener to the foods being served street-side all around the world, and I found it deeply inspiring. 

The book is chunky, too - at a hefty 400 pages - and as well as the photography and tips on where to eat, you get recipes so you can recreate some of the dishes yourself, at home, meaning you don't need to travel all the way to Kuala Lumpur for authentic Malaysian Chicken Wings, which is handy. I'm aching to get back into my kitchen to make Bolivian Silpancho, or even the Shawarma, from Beirut. And that Indonesian Nasi Goreng isn't getting away, either. It's not often I feel this inspired by a book, I'm telling you. It made me just want to jump on a train to Edinburgh Farmer's Market for lunch. Gorgeous. 

As well as educating me about street food and the different kinds served up around the world, this book inspired me. I wanted to recreate these dishes straight away, trying new flavour combinations. I've always loved street food. It's colourful and full of personality - it has a feeling of just being thrown together casually in the back of a food truck, but done in a really beautiful way. Even if you don't travel very much, you'll still get a lot out of this book. I love it. Ten out of ten.
