Peanut Butter: The Butter Debate

Just to let you know, this post was written before I started the paleo diet to help ease my psoriasis. Nowadays I eat a more allergy-friendly diet, but leave these older, non-paleo posts up in case they are useful to readers, as I know not everyone eats the same as I do. Thanks for your understanding.

I was drawn to a quotation from Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy in the Love Music Love Food book, on peanut butter. Here it is:

"The thing people misunderstand about peanut butter is that it is not a substitute for butter! In fact there is nothing so fine as applying peanut butter to already semi-melted butter. The effect is moderately orgasmic."

I have to admit, I am also a lover of peanut butter spread onto buttered bread, which I know is not healthy but there is something about it that does make it feel downright naughty. I mentioned this to a friend, who with a wave of the hand, dismissed it as "too greasy", preferring her peanut butter spread more frugally, on dry toast.

Peanut butter was loved by Elvis, is loved by Lady Gaga and could possibly cut the risk of heart attacks. Yes, really.

So, the debate begins. With butter or without? What do you think?

  1. Without butter (what would you expect from me!) - but on hot spelt soda and just to be awkward I would make mine with almond butter - even better for heart health.

  2. Ah I love almond butter, thanks for reminding me of it, and it's great that it's healthier too.
