Review of I Love My Barbecue Recipe Book

I love barbecues, don't you? I love the fact that it brings everyone outside, you can invite a few people around - it feels like a bit more important than a regular dinner or lunch. And I love that everyone gets talking over a burger or two. I'm married to an Argentinian. We do quite a lot of barbecues when the sun comes out. 

When I found out about this new book coming out just in time for the sunshine to make an appearance again, I was really excited.

I think you can always look for more barbecue cooking inspiration. For us, it gets a bit samey - the same old burgers, chicken drumsticks and sausages. It's good, once in a while, to jazz it all up a bit and try something different. 

I was sent this book - I Love My Barbecue - to review - and it ticked all the boxes. The recipes are colourful, healthy looking, and while there are the breadcrumbs and the bread rolls in a few recipes, you could easily switch them out if you wanted to. There are also a number of recipes that cater for a lower carb, more paleo lifestyle, which I thought was brilliant.

It's not just all about meat, either. There's a section on vegetarian food - as well as another on fish, and even suggestions for desserts to cook outside, too. 

I tried a few recipes from the book - the Chicken Strips with Basil and Lime has become a dinnertime favourite with all of us. The chicken is marinated, skewered and then grilled until cooked, golden and smoky. There's a gorgeous basil and lime mayonnaise to go with it - and it's beautiful. When we don't have a barbecue going, I cook them under the grill in the kitchen and they work just as well - with a little less smokiness, of course. 

The Pork, Pancetta and Parmesan Burgers were loved by the kids and the husband - again, easy to make and tasty - I made them without the focaccia and we just ate them alongside some butternut fries and a salad.

I have my eye still on a lot of recipes I want to make - like the Vegetable Satay and the Scallops with Thai Dipping Sauce

Not all the recipes are photographed, but many are. And the ones that aren't are simple enough to follow. If you're gluten free, you can make adjustments to the recipes - use gluten free breadcrumbs, or buns, for example. If you eat more of a paleo diet, I found that I could sub quite a few ingredients and make these recipes work. I make burgers and meatballs without the breadcrumbs anyway - or use coconut aminos instead of soy sauce, for example. Any sugar in dressings can be replaced with a little honey or coconut sugar, if you like. And use home-made mayonnaise over shop bought, if you need to, to fit more of a primal template.

I definitely feel more excited about summer now with this book. Flicking through the vivid photographs gives me inspiration and the easy to follow instructions makes cooking things like seafood, fish and desserts - which seem scary at first on the barbecue - sound quite reassuringly easy.
