Chocolate-Covered Bacon?

There's no reason I suppose, why this wouldn't work - I mean sweet and salty go so well together - just think of peanut butter and chocolate cupcakes for example. But what I can't quite get my head around is why would anyone dip crispy bacon rashers into melted chocolate. But Marini's in Santa Cruz has done just that.

It's available in store as well as online, where it sells for $9.00 for a half-pound box. Marini's also sell a Vegan's Nightmare ice cream - scoops of maple syrup flavoured ice cream studded with the now famous pieces of chocolate covered bacon.

See this gastronomic treat for yourself - but would you buy it?

  1. I have actually seen cookies with bacon, so it doeas not suprise me. :) I like sweet & salty combination. Although when you use real dark chocolate it is not sweet at all and tastes great with meat.

  2. Thanks for your comment Karolina - when I think about it I've seen venison served with a chocolate sauce so the chocolate/meat combo is more popular than I first thought. What struck me was that the bacon is so salty - having never tried it I can't judge but I have to admit that like you I also love salty/sweet tastes - if I had the chance to try this bacon I would! :)

  3. Hmmmm, it actually looks quite tasty and I agree that the concept isn't that foreign (ie sea-salted caramel, or eating sweet biscuits with tangy cheddar). And there's chocolate in Chicken Mole, isn't there? But it's too early in the morning where I am to think about eating any (and what on earth would you eat it with? Caramel-covered eggs? Sugar-glazed tomatoes?

  4. Hi everyone; I am Teresa Vandal from OH. My husband, son and I will hopefully moving to the UK; so I am looking for everything I can to learn about everything before I come...I do LOVE this site though too...Anyway enough prattling...Joey I was just about to say something similar when you talked about the venison...I even saw it on a movie once; I think it was called "Chacolat"...There was a scene when the lady was cooking for people to show the benefits of having chocolate in the town and she centered the whole dinner theme on chocolate including a roast with a chocolate sauce...Still though; Chocolate covered bacon?!?! *Raises eyebrow*...Then again there is that diner in NY; and probably a lot of others in other areas of the country; that batter fry things like candy bars and snack cakes... I am not sure if I would try those either...but I might...*GRIN*

  5. Kitchen Maid - there is that problem of breakfast and what to serve with it but I think sandwiched between some brioche to make a bacon sandwich (minus the brown sauce lol!) it wouldn't be too bad!

Teresa, thanks for your comment and kind words - glad you enjoy the site :) I don't remember that scene in Chocolat but that's a great excuse for me to watch it again! We also have deep fried Mars Bars in some chip shops and I think that you have to try any of this at least once to see for yourself! Thanks for commenting.
